What is volcano plot service?

In statistics, a volcano plot is a type of scatter-plot that is used to quickly identify changes in large data sets composed of replicate data. It plots significance versus fold-change on the y and x axes, respectively. These plots are increasingly common in omic experiments such as genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics where one often has a list of many thousands of replicate data points between two conditions and one wishes to quickly identify the most meaningful changes. A volcano plot combines a measure of statistical significance from a statistical test (e.g., a p value from an ANOVA model) with the magnitude of the change, enabling quick visual identification of those data-points (genes, etc.) that display large magnitude changes that are also statistically significant.

• CD ComputaBio does not use your data or quantitations - it solely relies on the annotations placed on a probe list by a previously run statistical filter. Not all filters will generate the necessary values needed for the plot, but if a filter includes a p-value (or FDR), and some measure of difference then you can select it in the Data view and launch the volcano plot.
• Within the plot each probe will be plotted, customs can mouse over probes to see what they are and you can double click on them to go to that probe in the chromosome view. Lines will appear across the plot at the locations of the 0.05 and 0.01 cutoffs.

• CD ComputaBio can opt to highlight other sub-lists onto the points shown on the plot.
• CD ComputaBio can drag a selection region up the plot to generate a probe list which you can save which will be filtered by the significance value you're using. This is somewhat inexact so you may prefer to use the List Annotation Value Filter instead which will provide more control.
